We’ve written and consulted quite a bit about U.S. citizens retiring to Spain. Recently, due to a lot of positive press, more and more people are asking us about the process of moving to Portugal and residency in Portugal. This post will take a 30,000 foot (9144 meter) view of the process. The great news is that it’s much easier than the Spanish residency process. Let’s dig in!
I love you Spain! You are a great place to visit, but an even better place to call home. Who knew you would touch our hearts? With Valentine’s day approaching, I thought “why not write a letter to Spain?”

In the early hours of the morning on August 26th, 2012, we stepped off of our overnight flight and were in Barcelona! We lived along the beautiful southern coast of Spain from August 2012, with a trip to Asia in the mix too. In Spain, we live in a small town named Almuñécar and we use this as our home base to explore more of Europe as well. We kept track of every expenditure along the way the first couple of year and have shared our cost of living in Spain with you. This page is a compilation of our expenses in Spain and how much it really costs for our family of 4 to live in Spain. We have more recent updates included too.
We know you work hard to provide a great life for the family. When it comes to the few weeks vacation you have each year, you do your best to balance entertainment for the kids and some relaxing time for the parents. It’s great fun to have a vacation with the family, guys or girls, but you also need to fuel the family foundation. Why not visit Jamaica for a couples vacation? We have been to Jamaica several times and we have also scheduled other parents only vacations in the Caribbean.
