You have a blank wall that needs something special to bring it to life. It would seem the logical choice to head online to buy a canvas print seems the logical choice to make but hold on for a minute!

There are several things you need to consider before you hit the buy button and commit to buying that canvas. This is particularly pertinent when you are having your own picture printed. If it’s messed up due to something you’ve done, it’s unlikely you will get your money back, so you will be out of pocket and still have that blank wall.

The Context

It’s more than likely that you will already have the context of your canvas print in mind. In general, images that are reproduced as canvas prints have a personal meaning to you or the person you are gifting the canvas too. It may seem like a great idea to create a canvas featuring a teenage couple but what a waste of money that will be if they split up in 3 months’ time. Even the finest quality canvas print if the subject matter isn’t something that will sustain interest long term. Keep it simple and meaningful and you won’t go far wrong.

Canvases As Gifts

Buying a canvas print with the intention of it being a gift for somebody carries its own set of rules. You need to both consider the subject matter and it’s intended locale. This is especially important if it’s going to be a gift as even though you think it will be a perfect addition to the dining room the recipient might have other ideas. Just because they admired that amazing picture you took of that horse doesn’t mean they want it looking at them as they eat.

Those with contemporary homes and plain, painted walls will probably have several canvases already and are a safe bet. However, traditionalists with their patterned wallpaper and ornate furnishings, probably won’t be so enthusiastic.  You shouldn’t be offended if your gift ends up in the bathroom or somewhere else it won’t clash with the décor.

Canvases as Decor Items

Colors and location are just as important as the subject when you are buying canvas prints purely as decorative items. Savvy decorators take pictures and already know where they will be displayed once they have been transferred onto canvas. The rest of us, however, tend to have a space to fill and start scrolling through our phone gallery to find something that fits the bill.

Look at the rest of the room before taking the plunge and ordering that canvas. If a bright pop of color will add to the aesthetics of a cool room then go for it. If it will stick out like a sore thumb, then you better find another image. A plain, painted wall is effectively a blank canvas waiting to be adorned. Choose the right pieces of art and it will become a real focal point, to spark conversations and catch one’s eye for the right reasons.
